Obviously this was not an exactly fair test of firearms knowledge. This quiz was not made to be easy. If you scored more than half correct, you should be proud!

42%.

If I didn't reload and wasn't a good test taker I probably would have gotten closer to 25%

36%, about what I expected. I knew around 8 answers and random guessed at the rest. Just who in hell knows which armory didn't make Enfields in .303?

There was only one reloading question and any loader knows red dot is a shotgun powder, make 308 go boom.

Re: General Firearms Knowledge- take the quiz

I believe that question #17 has an incorrect answer.

17. Clymer and Forster
1) are the brothers which bought John Moses Brownings autoloading shotgun patents
2) manufacturers of headspace gauges
3) inventors who pioneered the smokeless powder revolution

Unless I'm completely mistaken, JMB sold his A5 autoloading shotgun patent to Browning. Not to Clymer/Forster.

Clymer and Forster are TWO COMPANIES that make headspace gauges and reamers for gunsmiths. I should know. I've got them in my shop downstairs. Not the people who bought JMB's A5 patent as this 'quiz' suggests as the correct answer.

So, if ANYONE can prove otherwise, I'd love to hear about it. This is probably NOT the only mistake they made, but this one I KNOW. FOR SURE.

Raymond 09-06-2009 08:09 PM

Re: General Firearms Knowledge- take the quiz

69% - I don't reload (no idea on powders, etc.), and I had to guess a lot on nominal bullet caliber dimensions and cartridge dimensions.

I do collect curio & relic firearms, so the Enfield and Swedish questions were easy.

I agree, a thoroughly ass-kicking test :confused_ma:

And I agree with wallew that Clymer and Forster manufacture headspace gauges. I don't know who bought J.M. Browning's autoloading shotgun patents.

Course, in a past life I moderated a well known forum for collectors of a certain type of WW2 weapon...Before I sold the bulk of my collection, I spent hours daily in research and learning about these particular weapons (as well as many others). That probably helped somewhat on the terminology and historical questions, although I had to guess on a couple of the reloading questions.

As "Wallew" states above, they are incorrect on number 17....It is Clymer and Forster.

As a top-of-my head guess, I would say Remington did....

Remember the Remington Model 11? It was eerily similar to the Auto 5 Browning...I could be wrong though.

Actually, Remington bought the right to produce the Model 11 from Browning. Though JMB did try and sell the patent TO Remington, but...

History
John Browning presented his design (which he called his best achievement[3]) to Winchester, where he had sold most of his previous designs. When Winchester refused his terms, Browning went to Remington. Tragically, the president of Remington died of a heart attack as Browning waited to offer them the gun. This forced Browning to look overseas to produce the shotgun. It was produced by FN (a company that had already produced Browning-designed pistols) starting in 1902. Remington would later license-produce it as the Remington Model 11. (It was also license-produced by Savage and Franchi.[3]) The Model 11 was the first autoloading shotgun made in the USA. Production in Belgium continued until the start of World War II, when Browning-marked examples were produced by Remington Arms in the United States[4]. Unlike the Remington Model 11, the Remington-produced Browning shotguns had magazine cutoffs. Some 850,000 Remington Model 11 shotguns were produced before production ended in 1947. In 1952, production returned to FN, where it continued to be produced until the end. However, the majority of production moved to Japan in 1975. Finally, in 1998, manufacture of A-5s ceased except for a few commemorative models created at FN in 1999. By that time, it was well-established as the second-best-selling autoloading shotgun in U.S. history, after the Remington 1100.[3]

Re: General Firearms Knowledge- take the quiz

AND the question (can't remember the number) that asked about the 8000 Cougar pistol, said it was made by Stoeger.

BUT, the 8000 Cougar IS a Beretta, NOT Stoeger. It may be MADE by Stoeger, but is SAYS Beretta, NOT Stoeger. If they had NOT said 8000 Cougar pistol, I might have listed Stoeger. But being they said specifically 8000 Cougar, I chose Beretta.

Beretta 8000 Cougar

Stoeger Cougar

The STOEGER COUGAR IS SPECIFICALLY NOT THE 8000 Cougar. THAT IS BERETTA. Though in all honesty, they ARE the same gun made by Stoeger. Just another 'incorrect' answer...

I agree with you, I have Forster headspace gauges on my loading bench right now. Otherwise I never heard of these names in firearms history.

53%.
I'm with the whiners. NOT a practical test, but a little bit illuminating at the same time. Much of the Euro stuff wasn't too bad....
I found it odd that there was no question about whether the AR-15 is superior to the AK-47, nor whether the .45ACP is better for self defense than a 9mm.
I had to laugh at myself when the takedown parts of a 1911 question made me head scratch.....haven't touched a 1911 in years! *lets see....barrel bushing, slide, barrel, mainspring, spring guide, frame* Sad.

Re: General Firearms Knowledge- take the quiz

I contacted Theduardo over on Freesteader.com forum and mentioned to him that a couple of the answers were incorrect. Though I DID like the test.

Here is his response. It IS illuminating for sure.

-------------

Theduardo said:

I am glad you liked it.

I kept reading some sophomoric gun quizzes on Facebook and thought I would add my own. The problem is after I made it, I was locked out so I could not go back and edit it. I accidentally choose the wrong right answer for the Headspace question, and thought to clarify the Stoegar/Beretta one.

If you scored a 64%, you did damn well IMO :)

Have a good one!

-T

So, realize that there are at least a couple of incorrect or at least partially incorrect answers. And the author of the test can't even make changes to fix it, try as he may.

I just joined Freesteader.com/forums - looks interesting as a Liberatarian forum. I'll let you know after I read a few forums.
